The Physics of Bullets

Fired Into the Air

Police investigators have determined that the police officers who were injured near the Art Museum on July 4 were struck by 40-caliber bullets fired from the same gun. According to police, a 40-caliber bullet, fired unimpeded straight up into the air, could travel about 1.25 miles before tumbling back to earth.

Investigators also believe the shots that struck the officers may have been fired by someone a mile or more away. About 71,000 residents live within a one-mile radius of the Art Museum.
