A Neighborhood Beset By Outside Development

For decades, Philadelphia’s Chinatown neighborhood has contended with large outside infrastructure developments. Some projects were completed, such as the Vine Street Expressway, the Pennsylvania Convention Center, and the commuter tunnel. Others — including the proposed Phillies ballpark at 12th and Vine Streets and a casino in the former Gallery mall — were blocked by neighborhood opposition. The latest project is a proposed Sixers arena at 10th and Market Streets.
