Regional Rail’s Slow Return to Normal

After months of delays for commuters caused by equipment shortages, SEPTA’s Regional Rail service has improved. The transit agency’s 223 Silverliner IV cars need to pass three benchmarks before being returned to service: an inspection, installation of a new thermal-detection system, and repair.

Inspected: 223

SEPTA completed safety inspections on all 223 Silverliner IV cars on Nov. 14,

the deadline set by the federal government.

Thermal-detection system installed : 210

The upgraded thermal-detection systems are being installed after

five Regional Rail trains caught fire in 2025.

Repaired and ready for service: 180

SEPTA has also made repairs to cars where problems were identified during the inspections.

Returned to service: 78

SEPTA says it needs 123 cars to return to normal service.
