In the 2016 election, the first with Donald Trump on the ballot, the outer suburbs trended Republican, while suburban towns closer to Philadelphia voted Democratic, often by heavy margins. In 2020, Joe Biden expanded the Democratic edge in the suburbs by 105,000 votes, as more towns in Montgomery County and the Main Line turned more solidly Democratic. In this year’s election, many of Biden’s suburban gains were rolled back, and Trump flipped four towns that had voted Democratic in both 2016 and 2020.
